Curriculum Team Leader Physical Education
Ossett Academy PE Department aims to inspire and motivate all students to be physically active. The department wants all students, parents and carers to recognise the physical and psychological benefits of a healthy and active lifestyle while in education and beyond.
Every lesson should have a productive and enjoyable atmosphere, where all staff and students work collaboratively to make progress. Lessons should motivate and excite students of all ages and abilities to grow, learn and assume responsibility for their learning. Participation and achievement should be measured, monitored and celebrated. All the members of the PE Department are committed to providing our students with moments of inspiration and enjoyment that students will remember forever.
This vision is to be achieved with the following core aims and values in mind:
- Encourage enjoyment in PE through a range of physical activities.
- Maximum participation in all lessons.
- Students to assume own responsibility for learning through leading parts of the lesson allowing them to inspire others and instil positive attitudes.
- Students to engage in enjoyable and challenging learning experiences which are child centred.
- Provide a variety of sporting opportunities outside of the curriculum that accommodate for all levels.
- Foster and nurture each child’s talent and potential, including G&T.
- Maximise examination results.
- Develop awareness of physical development including fitness skills.
Course Content at Key Stage 3
At Key Stage 3, students have two lessons of PE per week. During lessons students will experience a wide range of activities.
Sporting activities undertaken by boys and girls at Key Stage 3:
Football, Rugby League, Athletics, Basketball, Netball, Dance, Swimming, Rounders, Cricket, OAA, Fitness, Tennis, Badminton, Ultimate Frisbee, Tchoukball, Hockey, Cross Country, Gymnastics, Trampolining, Fitness Testing, NFL Flag Football and Softball.
Key Stage 3 students explore specific topics each year which aim to enhance knowledge and understanding of both healthy and active lifestyles whilst preparing students for potential GCSE PE, BTEC First in Sport and Dance for their examinations. The topics covered are:
Sportsmanship, warming up and cooling down, short term and long term effects of exercise and the function and structure of the muscular system.
Leadership and citizenship, components of Fitness, sport specific fitness and training and expanding the knowledge of the muscular system.
Officiating and coaching, principles of training, training zones and working intensities, fitness testing, training programmes suitable for individual needs and developing the understanding of the muscular system.
Students will be assessed through the new doddle system ‘life after levels’. This is designed to raise attainment in the following areas:-
- Application and development of skills
- Making and applying decisions
- Analysis of performance
- Making informed choices about healthy and active lifestyles
- Leadership and officiating
- Citizenship and Sportmanship
Course Content at Key Stage 4
Key stage 4 Physical Education focuses on a curriculum that inspires all students to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically depending activities. It provides opportunities for students to become physically confident in ways which support their health and fitness. There are opportunities to participate in a variety of sports that builds character and helps embed values such as fairness and respect.
Activities covered include: Football, Rugby League, Athletics, Basketball, Netball, Dance, Swimming, Rounders, Cricket, Fitness, Tennis, Badminton, Ultimate Frisbee, Tchoukball, Hockey, Cross Country, Gymnastics, Trampolining, Fitness Testing, Volleyball, NFL and Soft Ball
GCSE PE (AQA)
GCSE Physical Education provides students with the knowledge and understanding of how to live a healthy and active lifestyle, enabling them to make informed choices about their own physical development and provide opportunities for a Career in Sport. The course focuses on Applied Anatomy, Physiology and Sports Psychology. The course has a practical weighting where students can be assessed in a variety of roles and activities in which to participate in physical activity. Students will learn how to analyse and evaluate performance and suggest effective plans for improvement.
GCSE Course Content
Paper 1: The human body and movement in physical activity and sport.
Written exam: 1 hour 15 minutes
Paper 2: Socio-cultural influences and well-being in physical activity and sport.
Written exam: 1 hour 15 minutes
Practical Exam: Students will be assessed in three sports focusing on practical ability during a competitive situation and isolated skills.
Coursework: Students will be assessed on their analysis and evaluation of performance to bring about improvement in one activity.
Dance helps students to develop technical and expressive skills as well as knowledge and understanding of dance through performing choreography with a critical appreciation of dance.
Component 2: Dance Appreciation
Written exam: 1 hour 30 minutes
Component 1: Performance and Choreography
BTEC Sport provides students with the knowledge and understanding when working within the Sports Sector. The skills learnt whilst studying will aid progression to further progression in the Sports Industry. Opportunities will include working as a Sports Coach or Fitness Instructor and many more work place progressions. The course will focus on the following:-
Unit 1: Fitness for exercise sport.
(25% of grade/50 marks)
Unit 2: Practical Sports Performance
Unit 3: Training for Personal Fitness
Unit 4: Leading Sport Activities
Cambridge Nationals Sports Science
Sports Science takes an engaging, practical and inspiring approach to learning and assessment. The new Cambridge Nationals in Sport Science provides students with a broad knowledge and understanding of different aspects of sports science including sports psychology, nutrition and equip students with practical skills such as learning to design and evaluate a training programme. The course will focus on the following:
Unit 1: Reducing The risk of injuries
(25% of grade- 60 marks)
Unit 2: Applying principles of training
Unit 3: The body’s response to physical activity
Unit 4: Sports Psychology.
Career Opportunities and Progression within the Subject
Exercise Physiologist— research and analysing athletics in order to help student improve their performance.
Sports Training— jobs such as Personal Trainer, Strength and Conditioning Coach, Fitness Instructors working to reach targets.
Sports Medicine— Medical Practitioners, Physiotherapists, Physical Therapists to name a few of this science based field.
Sports Nutritionist— analysing and developing diet plans for athletics.
Sports Coach— developing leadership to support others.
Education— educating the next generation.
Sports Official— implementing the rules of competitive sport.
Sport Psychologist— understand the minds of athletes and support them through intense times.
Biomechanist— the study of athletes’ movement in biological systems.
Sport Journalist— writing reports on sporting competitions and interviewing Sports Performers for media coverage.
Sports Photography— getting right next to the action to capture the moments of great athletes.
Sports Marketing— adversing Sports Organisations to promote to the required audience.
How Parents Can Support Learning
It is proven that healthy children are healthy learners which means that parents should advocate preparation for an active lifestyle. Help promote physical activity by getting children happily involved in physical activity by making it fun and by making it something that everyone can benefit from not just athletes but families. There is a proven link between physical activity and classroom accomplishment; there is no question that Physical Education should be an everyday part of every child’s education during school hours and outside. As a team we can drive and motivate one another to overcome both physical and mental barriers in order to achieve goals, develop on self-belief and build confidence to overcome difficulty and motivate achievements.
