Brandon’s big news!

November 28, 2019

A huge well done to Year 11’s Brandon Goodair who has recently been selected to play American Football for Great Britain Lions under 17s!

Brandon started playing for Leeds Assassin Academy in February, as a slot wide receiver. After training in this position for a couple of months, he decided he was better suited to defence.

Brandon said “I struggled with catching deep balls and adapting to the run heavy offence, so the week before our first scrimmage, I asked the defensive coordinator if I could switch to defence.

“I started out playing free safety, in which I got six tackles and four passes defended in said scrimmage. I continued to train as a safety up until our first tournament in which our DC moved me to middle linebacker, a position in which I had never played before.

“I ended up starting and this was my worst tournament of the season. Despite this, our DC kept starting me and I kept progressing as a player. I eventually reached the stage where I could tell my teammates the play the offence were going to run, before they ran it.

“Our team made the playoffs, however at this time I was on holiday and wasn’t able to play. This meant I didn’t receive an invitation to the trials so I decided I would take on the open trials. Standing at 5’8 and 56Kg, I was at a height and weight disadvantage, but through the use of my long arms, speed and knowledge of the sport, I was able to make the 73 man roster for Great Britain, beating 300 other applicants.”

Brandon will begin his journey as a GB Lion this weekend in Telford at the team’s first and only organised team activity of the year.

What an achievement Brandon, congratulations – we’re proud of you!!
