Matthew’s particularly great debate!

November 20, 2019

Our very own Matthew Roe wowed judges at the regional heat of ‘The Great Debate’ this week at at Bradford’s Woodhouse Grove School, where he was crowned winner of the heat!

Matthew competed against eight other students, aged between 16 and 19 in this national public-speaking competition and will now go on to represent Accord Sixth Form at the Grand Final, taking place at Windsor Castle on Saturday 28 March 2020.

Donna Shoesmith-Evans, Assistant Head at Bradford’s Woodhouse Grove School said “The winner of our heat was Matthew Roe who presented superbly. He received excellent feedback from our two judges and we wish him well when he represents the Bradford region in the final.”

The heat saw students tasked with delivering a five-minute speech in answer to the question ‘Should historical figures be judged on the morals of today?’ Students were encouraged to consider all periods of history when deciding their argument, and to pick a subject matter of personal interest to them.

Matthew said “I very much enjoyed taking part in this debate, and representing my school regionally and nationally. I’m looking forward to participating in the final next year, which will be an amazing experience.”

This competition is a partnership between the Historical Association and BBC World Histories Magazine. It is an opportunity for students to gain valuable experience in speaking to an audience and developing their debating skills, confidence and self-esteem.

The winner and runners-up of the competition will be awarded with a cash prize, with their schools receiving prizes from the Historical Association’s sponsors. All finalists also receive free student membership of the Historical Association.
